My Journey to Functional Medicine
I started navigating the complex world of conventional medicine when I was just 11 years old, dealing with a host of health issues. I often felt unheard and frustrated with the quality of care, especially in the realm of women’s health. Throughout my health journey, I encountered a range of dismissive responses from healthcare providers, like “You’ll grow out of it—it’s just growing pains,” “We don’t know why you have IBS; let’s try an antidepressant,” or “Pain during sex is normal at your age—it should improve over time.” The worst was hearing, “You may have difficulty having children, so birth control might be your best option to regulate your periods.” As a patient, I know what it’s like to feel hopeless about your health and uncertain about your future.
Despite these setbacks, I took matters into my own hands by researching and advocating for myself, which ultimately led me to study science and medicine. Working as a conventionally trained physician assistant/physician associate in family medicine and women’s health, I found myself with more questions than answers for my patients. At the same time, my health continued to decline, and I knew I needed a better approach. This led me to pursue a post-graduate certificate in nutrition science, which laid the groundwork for further studies in functional medicine at The Institute for Functional Medicine.
Functional medicine has provided me with answers that conventional medicine couldn’t offer, unlocking a new approach to healing and allowing me to embrace my mind and body like never before. It’s not an easy path, but it’s absolutely worth it. Now, I’m dedicated to helping other women on their journeys, giving them the knowledge and resources to take control of their health and find their flow.
